Berek on Partnership Unions: Kotula Adopted a Good Tactic. The Tactic of Doing What's Realistic is Good

- This discussion within the coalition, within our governmental setup, regarding whether such a bill [on partnership unions] should be a government bill, what its shape and content should be, has been ongoing for a long time. It's no secret that the PSL set certain boundaries here, and had doubts about the project in general - said Maciej Berek in an interview with Agata Adamek on TVN24's "Jeden na jeden" program. - I think Katarzyna Kotula adopted a very good tactic. She adopted a tactic to succeed in introducing this institution into our legal system. […] Yes, these are very important elements [symbolic elements like a ceremony or a shared surname], certainly for many people - he continued. - But I think that if you were to ask people living in these types of unions, relationships – and Minister Kotula met with these communities very often – what is more important to you: to have a law that will resolve legal problems, such as access to health information, the possibility of childcare, tax issues, even at the cost of not having the ceremony at this stage? What do you prefer – to have no solution, or to have, as you say, a scaled-down one? I think all these people will say: we prefer to start with what is available - he stated. - I think the tactic: "let's do what is realistic, let's get a majority for this project" and the tactic: "this should be a government bill, through which the government will show that it is ready to introduce these modern, expected solutions" is a good tactic. Even if it comes at a certain cost, perhaps not fulfilling all expectations, let it at least fulfill the basic ones - he added.
