On the anniversary of the establishment of the Government of National Defense, the President will commence the centenary celebrations of the Battle of Warsaw. Together with representatives of all parliamentary clubs and circles, Andrzej Duda will lay flowers before the monument of Wincenty Witos and other fathers of independence. The culmination of today's celebrations is to be the naming of one of the rooms in the Belvedere Palace after the Government of National Defense of Wincenty Witos.
The organization of ceremonies related to the establishment of the cabinet led by the interwar peasant movement leader is not accidental. The formation of a new government in the summer of 1920 was necessitated by the war with the Bolsheviks. In a situation of threat, after relatively short negotiations, all political forces joined in building a new cabinet, which immediately began negotiations and peace talks with Russia, and its composition included the entire political spectrum: from Wincenty Witos himself, through Ignacy Daszyński, to the later president Gabriel Narutowicz.
One hundred years later, the President wishes to juxtapose this idea with the broad coalition for Polish causes advocated during the campaign. "In the Belvedere Palace, one of the rooms will be named the Wincenty Witos Government of National Defense Hall. The President has invited representatives of the peasant movement, the authorities of the Polish People's Party, the authorities of the Farmers' Solidarity, agricultural unions, and politicians associated with the Minister of Agriculture," Minister Wojciech Kolarski tells 300POLITYCE.
"This is a demonstration on my part, on the part of The Left, Confederation, and the entire Polish Coalition, who have confirmed they will attend. We can always look for common ground. When such ceremonies take place, we respect the choices of Poles. These are sometimes symbolic gestures, but I think they are very important," responded the leader of the peasant party, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, to the invitation on Radio Trójka, while simultaneously assuring that the Polish People's Party does not intend "to be either a side dish to PiS or an appendage to Civic Platform."
