NEWS 300: President Duda Signs Amendment to Judicial Laws
As 300POLITYKA has learned, President Andrzej Duda has signed the so-called amendment to judicial laws, which in practice will accelerate the election of the First President of the Supreme Court. The Sejm passed it last week, and the Senate approved it – without amendments – late last night. The amendment also introduces, among other things, anti-obstruction provisions concerning the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) and the election of Supreme Court judges. The changes will come into effect after the amendment is published in the Journal of Laws.
Some analysts and commentators have pointed out that it might be more beneficial for the right-wing to conclude the entire process faster. "- From the perspective of those governing, the sooner the reform of the justice system is completed, the better. In this case, haste is more than justified" wrote Jacek Karnowski on wPolityce. The entire legislative process took only a few days, and with a swift decision, President Duda preempts the opposition's evening protests in front of the Presidential Palace.
