Schetyna on Gawłowski: We view this case, and especially the court's decision, as the beginning of PiS's election campaign
- I want to state very clearly that we view this entire case [of Stanisław Gawłowski], and especially the court's decision and its justification, as the beginning of PiS's election campaign, as an attack on the political opposition, on Civic Platform. These are Belarusian standards; this is how political opposition is treated in Belarus, as well as in Turkey and Russia. This is how politicians from other camps are eliminated, this is how election campaigns are conducted. I want to say that we will not accept such a situation. We will clearly inform the public opinion, both domestically and also in Europe and worldwide, about the violation of the rule of law standards in Poland. We will inform the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights. We will also discuss this at the Council of Europe session. We cannot allow for the creation of a political weapon in this way, by exerting pressure on the judiciary, by multiplying accusations that have repeatedly been refuted by Gawłowski. The detention, and then arrest, of a Member of Parliament crosses the standards of a civilized country. I want to state very clearly and remind: it was Stanisław Gawłowski who resigned from his parliamentary immunity. It was Gawłowski who repeatedly requested and made himself available to the National Prosecutor's Office, including in Szczecin, wanting to be informed and to hear the charges concerning him. This did not happen. The Central Anticorruption Bureau detained him in the prosecutor's office building in Szczecin. This shows the absurdity of the situation - said Grzegorz Schetyna at a briefing in Szczecin.
