- Following the publication in the last few dozen hours of a series of reports concerning irregularities at the mortuary of Warsaw's Southern Hospital, which were largely based on information obtained from anonymous informants, the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw-Ursynów has once again reviewed all these proceedings - said Prosecutor Piotr Skiba at a press conference.
- It has been decided that the proceedings concerning forged death certificates will continue as a separate investigation; completed proceedings will not be reopened. However, taking into account the information about events of which the prosecutor's office had not previously been informed by anyone [...] preliminary proceedings have been initiated - he continued.
- This concerns issues related to the collection of undue fees at the Southern Hospital's mortuary, as well as demanding various sums of money from different entities in connection with recommending specific funeral homes to families of deceased persons - he went on to say.
- We are therefore talking about conducting separate verification activities [...] this concerns so-called managerial bribery, as well as [...] in a second specific area [...] it concerns the desecration of the remains of an unidentified person - he added.
- To date, no notification regarding such conduct has been received, neither by the police nor by the prosecutor's office. In the course of other proceedings, no conduct of this nature has been revealed or raised by anyone - he stated.
- Taking into account the necessity of verifying and clarifying information which, as I emphasize, to date is circulating in the media solely based on information and signals from anonymous informants, the evidentiary material only allows for the initiation of verification activities, but at this stage does not permit the initiation of a formal investigation into the matter, let alone the pressing of criminal charges against anyone - he pointed out.
