President Nawrocki Presents Poland's Vision for the European Union

Tomasz Synowiec

- To avoid being merely theoretical. We are not just offering a negative message about what we believe is wrong. We are not lamenting. We have a positive message. We have a Polish program for the European Union, the main assumptions of which I would like to briefly present to you - said Karol Nawrocki during a lecture at Charles University in Prague.

-The starting point for the discussion are two fundamental assumptions: the masters of the treaties and the sovereigns deciding on the shape of European integration are and must remain the Member States, as the only functioning European democracies - the President of the Republic of Poland continued.

President Nawrocki presented proposals for the EU:

  • Maintaining the principle of unanimity in those areas of EU decisions where it currently applies
  • Maintaining the principle of "one state - one commissioner"
  • Restoring the presidency to the head of the executive of the Member State currently holding the EU presidency, which means a return to the nature of the presidency before the Lisbon Treaty. In this regard, Poland also proposes the abolition of the position of President of the European Council
  • Changing the voting system in the Council of Europe to equalize the voting power of larger and smaller states
  • Basing the functioning of the EU on pragmatic, not ideological principles
  • Renouncing aspirations to compete with NATO
