"We View It a Bit Differently": Polish President Nawrocki Cites Differences with Lithuanian Counterpart on Ukraine

"Regarding Ukraine, I would like to refer to the words of the President. There is not the slightest doubt, neither in Poland, nor in discussions between the Polish President and the Polish government, nor in discussions with Western and Central European partners, that we share a common view of the Russian threat," said President Karol Nawrocki in Vilnius, at a joint press conference with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda.

"We in Poland are capable of setting aside certain political emotions – and I, as the President of Poland, my own emotions concerning some actions by Western European countries – when we talk about our national security and the security of all of Europe. Here, we must all stand together," he stated.

As the Polish President noted: "The President and I view Ukraine's integration into the European Union somewhat differently. Our vision, and the continuation of these discussions, is on a slightly different level – my vision as the President of Poland. This, of course, does not preclude our full solidarity with Ukraine in the face of the Russian Federation. However, these are matters already between Poland and Ukraine."

He referred to the words of the Lithuanian President, who had stated earlier: "The European perspectives of Ukraine and Moldova are also very important. This is our common strategic goal. Ukraine should begin EU membership negotiations as soon as possible. The accession date should be 2030. At the same time, we must ensure that Moldova also walks this path alongside Ukraine.
